    Our History
The dream of Don Berlin, Dr. David Kahn and Dr. David Lion became a reality in 1984 when the Hospice Foundation of Greater Baton Rouge was incorporated. Don Berlin and David Lion both knew their cancer was terminal and that they wanted to die at home. Together with Dr. David Kahn, their oncologist, these men succeeded in laying the groundwork for what is today the Hospice Foundation of Greater Baton Rouge.

Through the tireless efforts of a small group of concerned individuals and business leaders, the Foundation became a reality. In the winter of 1985, a nurse and social worker were hired, and the Foundation began providing direct patient care. Major funding came from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and the Baton Rouge General. Additional funding came from numerous civic groups and generous individuals.

Hospice of Baton Rouge became a Capital Area United Way Agency in 1988. The Foundation began doing business as Hospice of Baton Rouge in 1991.

    History of Hospice
In the Middle Ages, hospices were way stations for weary travelers, the sick, and the dying where they could receive comfort, care and solace during the journey. Today hospices seek to bring this same kind of relief and comfort care to those who are dying and their families, in a warm, loving atmosphere with an emphasis on helping them to live as fully and normally as possible.

In 1973, the first hospice in the United States was established in New Haven, Connecticut. This was modeled after St. Christopher’s Hospice in London, England, which was founded by Dr. Cecily Saunders, in the early 60’s. Hospice in the United States has evolved into several different program structures including free-standing facilities, hospital affiliated providers and those that are exclusively home care.
    Did You Know?

    • Established in 1984, Hospice of Baton Rouge is beginning its 25th year of providing end-of-life care and support for this community.
    • Hospice of Baton Rouge is the OLDEST hospice and the ONLY nonprofit hospice in this area.
    • Hospice of Baton Rouge has cared for over 10,000 patients and their families and is the 2nd second oldest continuously operating hospice in Louisiana.
    • Hospice is not just for cancer patients. HBR provides care to individuals with non-cancer diagnoses such as: Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Pulmonary Disease, Dementia, HIV/AIDS, Stroke/Coma, ALS (Lou Gherig’s)...and others.
    • Hospice care is for everyone, regardless of age. Our youngest patient was 3 days old when she was admitted and our oldest patient celebrated her 107 birthday while in our care.

    • This year, 49% of the patients cared for by HBR had a non-cancer diagnosis.
    • HBR opened the first hospice inpatient unit in this region in 2005. The unit is designed to provide short-term stays for patients with uncontrolled pain or symptom control concerns. Over 700 individuals have been cared for since its opening. Patients usually remain in the unit for approximately 5 days.
    • The focus of hospice is on caring, not curing. Hospice can be provided in the home or any home-like setting such as a nursing home or an assisted living facility.
    • Bereavement services are available to everyone in the community.
    • An end-of-life care option that provides dying patients and their loved ones with comfort, compassion and dignity does exist. It’s called hospice care!
